Partner Scott Kaplowitch was quoted in the Wall Street Journal article, “A New Tax Break for Married Couples” discussing the Internal Revenue Service’s recently released final rules detailing a substantial estate-and-gift tax break for married couples who don’t set up expensive trusts before death.
“Who really knows what their estate’s going to be down the road?” says Scott Kaplowitch, an accountant at Edelstein & Co. in Boston. Besides asset growth, the survivor could get a windfall from elsewhere, such as an inheritance, or perhaps remarry someone with substantial assets, he adds.
